• NiS catalyst facilitates efficient hydrazine-assisted alkaline electrolysis for low-energy H2 production. • Energy consumption drops to 3.49 kWh/Nm3 H2, ∼57.6% less than conventional water electrolysis. • Asymmetric HzFC outputs 180 mA/cm2 at zero voltage via electrochemical neutralization. • HzFC enables electricity generation with 20.8 mW/cm2 power.
