Analysis of the group and fractional composition of crude oils requires the isolation of the main fractions such as saturates, aromatics, resins, and asphaltenes. This review examines the present methods for separating oils and oil residues into individual fractions, whose composition and properties regulate further processing. Critically discussed are traditional approaches to fractionating petroleum feedstocks using different chromatographic and extraction methods. Special attention is paid to the emerging methods in which supercritical fluids provide the basis for chromatographic or extraction separation of oil samples. As a cutting-edge methodology for isolating asphaltenes, the use of supercritical CO2 is considered in detail. The merits and limitations of using supercritical fluids to fractionate heavy oils and oil residues are also brought into focus. Finally, a summary is given of the current challenges and future perspectives of petroleum fractionation methods.
