Several issues on the development of soft magnetic composites for high-power magnetic devices

Abstract

Emerged circuit topologies for the third-generation power semiconductors demand superior performance of soft magnetic composites (SMCs) for high-power magnetic devices. Applications in renewable energy vehicles, photovoltaic power generation, artificial intelligence, and other fields require SMCs to exhibit high effective permeability, excellent DC-bias performance, and low core loss. In recent years, significant progress has been made in optimizing the DC-bias performance and reducing core loss of SMCs for high-power magnetic devices. However, further improvements in overall electromagnetic properties are still highly required due to the emergence of new applications and novel design concepts of high-power magnetic devices. Meanwhile, some key issues still exist at both the technical and theoretical levels. Based on the state of art and the latest research and development (R&D) results, this review timely summarizes the key challenges and corresponding feasible solutions facing SMCs in high-power magnetic devices. Several critical issues are discussed, including how to achieve high effective magnetic permeability under high frequencies, excellent DC-bias performance, and low core loss at elevated frequencies and temperatures. Additionally, the challenges and opportunities regarding the future development of SMCs for high-power magnetic devices are highlighted.
