• SNAC4/9 negatively regulates the resistance of tomatoes to Botrytis cinerea. • SNAC4/9 impairs tomatoes resistance to Botrytis cinerea by inhibiting the phenylpropanoid pathway. • SNAC4/9 regulates phenylpropanoid pathway key genes (PAL.C4H and 4CL) expression. • Chlorogenic acid enhances the disease resistance of tomatoes.
