• Variation in C. gigantea fine root anatomy and biomass was regulated by sampling site (genetic background), functional group (developmental stage), and season (phenological stage). • In the rainy season, soil moisture and total nitrogen predominantly control transportive root anatomy, whereas absorptive roots are primarily responsive to soil moisture. • In the dry season, soil total carbon and nitrogen become the main drivers for transportive roots, while absorptive roots are mainly determined by soil total carbon.
