Abstract

Abstract

Magnesium alloys generally exhibit limited strengthening response due to the weak interaction between basal 〈a〉 dislocations and conventional basal precipitates. Here, a yield-strength increase of ∼ 78 MPa is achieved in a commercial AZ31 alloy via sub-yield cyclic deformation, despite its negligible second-phase hardening response. This strengthening originates from the formation of a high density of Al-Al clusters (∼ 4.76 × 1024 m−3). Unlike second-phase particles, these clusters do not rely on crystallographic interfaces but act as uniformly distributed short-range obstacles, capable of directly impeding basal 〈a〉 dislocation motion. Their high number density significantly reduces the effective obstacle spacing, thereby imposing strong resistance to basal slip. These results demonstrate a distinct strengthening mechanism governed by high-density solute clustering, providing an alternative pathway to overcome the intrinsic limitation of precipitation strengthening in Mg alloys.
