• The phase composition of the products is highly sensitive to the Na/Li ratio. • Vanadium exists as V4+ in the precursor solution, and transforms into a mixed V2+/V3+/V4+ valence state in the products. • The Na/Li ratio regulates the local electrostatic environment and electronic structure of vanadium, affecting the change of NVP and NVPP phases. • The minor change in lattice parameters during charge-discharge, accompanied by a slight shift of V 2p1/2 and masking of V 2p3/2.
