Solvation: basic conception, visual observation and potential applications

Abstract

Solvation describes the interaction between a solvent and a solute and is the process by which solute and solvent molecules or ions rearrange to form solvated complexes. Solvation has a strong theoretical research background in classical solution chemistry and electrolyte electrochemistry. Recent breakthroughs in the visual observation of solvation have established new milestones in the development of this field. Combining conventional experimental characterization (e.g., nuclear magnetic resonance, NMR) with theoretical simulations (first principles, machine learning, molecular dynamics simulations), the recent developments in advanced femtosecond timeresolved coulomb explosion imaging (CEI) and time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS) technology is expected to advance the pace of theoretical exploration and practical application of solvation. This review summarizes the latest breakthroughs of solvation, discusses the application prospect of solvation in the field of electrochemistry and others, and also makes some suggestions for future research directions.
