• PIXE enabled quantitative macro-scale mapping of iron in brain tissue. • Substantia nigra shows high iron heterogeneity with distinct focal hot spots. • Maximum local iron concentrations reached 3096 ng/mg in non-diseased tissue. • No linear correlation was found between donor age and regional iron levels.
