• For the first time, FeTiO3 was doped with Sr to improve its photocatalytic activity. • Sr-doping affected the potential of the valence band rather than conduction band. • Sr incorporation in ilmenite enhanced its reductive performance for CO2 conversion. • Eight gas and liquid fuel products were identified from photo-reduction of CO2. • A multi-step PCET reaction mechanism for CO2 conversion was proposed.
