• A high-speed X-ray system was used to measure tissue strain within fresh ex vivo porcine lungs subjected to a direct blunt impact. • Measured tissue strains were found to be greatest between diverging 3rd order segmental bronchi. • Histological analysis of tissues in regions of peak strains found air-filled lesions characteristic of pulmonary interstitial emphysema. • Two trauma-specific injury mechanisms describing the initiation of emphysematous lesions within the peribronchial and interlobular connective tissues were proposed.
