• A novel polysaccharide (ADLP) was isolated from the rhizome of Arundo donax L. • The structural characteristics of ADLP were characterized. • ADLP was demonstrated to alleviate alcoholic liver injury. • ADLP exerts hepatoprotective effects by promoting hepatic lipid metabolism. • ADLP exerts hepatoprotective effects via the gut–liver axis.
