Abstract

The present paper thoroughly evaluated the electrochemical and chemical corrosion behavior of Ti41.4Zr28.52- Cu6.44Nb8.0Be15.64 metallic glass-based composites in 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 + x mol/L NaCl acid-salt solutions with varying NaCl concentrations (x = 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 mol/L). The results demonstrated that electrochemical corrosion of these composites was sensitive to the electrolyte composition. Corrosion current densities were consistently on the order of 10-8 A/cm2, with pitting corrosion occuring only when NaCl concentration reached 0.2 mol/L or higher. Additionally, distinct morphologies of sample surfaces were observed after anodic polarization. As the NaCl concentration in the acid-salt solutions rose from 0.01 to 0.3 mol/L, the sample surfaces exhibited a progression from slight black corrosion spots to selective dissolution of the amorphous matrix, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic investigations revealed the formation of various oxides on the sample surfaces, contributing to differences in corrosion properties. The chemical immersion testing further confirmed the corrosion properties of the amorphous composite alloys. The present study offers valuable insights and reference data for the aspect in engineering applications of the amorphous composite alloys.
