Abstract
At present the genetic and environmental dissection of alcohol dependence is more advanced than that of drug dependence, and this probably results from several factors. For example, the use of alcohol is sanctioned in most societies and generally the high rate of misuse changes slowly over long periods of time. As a result there is a relatively high prevalence of alcohol dependence, with many of those affected seeking treatment, and it is possible to recruit families and individuals for genetic studies. In contrast the legal status and occasionally faddish use of illicit drugs affect presentation, recruitment and the cooperation of family members. There has been an acceleration of interest recently in the genetics of misuse of substances other than alcohol, following clear demonstrations of genetic influences from family and twin studies and promising beginnings in molecular genetic research.
