• A simple and safe dual-deposition method for fabricating multilayered pro-magnesium ZnO/CoNi-LDH/MXene films on Mg anodes. • DFT calculations confirm the pro-magnesium nature of the film, remarkably reducing the Mg²⁺ migration energy barrier. • Effective suppression of anodic passivation film enables reversible Mg deposition and stripping in aqueous electrolytes. • Modified symmetric batteries display 0.5 V low overpotential, stable 300 cycles and ultralow polarization in full batteries.
