• CuS/PDA@PI aerogel achieved 97% broadband absorption at 200–2500 nm range. • CuS/PDA@PI aerogel had 1.963 kg m−2 h−1 evaporation rate with 119.8% efficiency. • CuS/PDA@PI aerogel had an efficient and cycling water purification performance.
