Abstract

• Three 3-thienyl-NiIIporphyrin hybrids bearing singly-, doubly- and triply-bonded alanines were prepared. • These hybrids were successfully electrochemical copolymerized with thiophene and its hydrophilic derivatives. • The hydrophilic modified conductive polymers exhibited the satisfied electrocatalytic HERs in a wide range of medias. • The hydrophilic G-2c-Ni-COOCH3 exhibited the better electrocatalytic activities and H2 conversion efficiency. • The current results provided the new insights of design and preparation of non-noble metal electrocatalytic HERs.
