Abstract
Different notions of sustainability are introduced, and conditions for sustainability are discussed. Fundamental environmental properties force systems to adopt certain fundamental orientations. Inadequate attention to this multidimensional set of ‘basic orientors’ leads to unsustainability. Sustainability can be assessed by defining a corresponding system‐specific set of indicators; a sample set is provided. Ethical considerations implicitly or explicitly shape particular paths to sustainability.
