Abstract

Abstract

En 中文
Non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs), generally synthesized from CO2-sourced cyclic carbonates and diamines, have emerged as a promising class of sustainable polymers. Due to their tunable structures and versatile properties, NIPUs have shown significant application potential in high performance fields such as electronic packaging, energy storage, automotive manufacturing, and construction materials. Accordingly, substantial research efforts have been directed toward improving their key properties. This review systematically summarizes recent advances in enhancing the key properties of NIPUs, with a focus on mechanical properties, flame retardancy, adhesion properties, thermal stability, environmental stability, and self-healing capability. Material design strategies, including the selection of monomers, optimization of polymerization conditions, and functional modifications, are discussed in detail, with an emphasis on their impact on the aforementioned properties. A cross-property analysis reveals that the performance optimization in NIPUs is inherently multidimensional, requiring integrated molecular- and microstructure-level design rather than isolated strategies. Despite significant progress, several challenges remain in understanding the mechanisms of multi-dimensional property enhancement, balancing performance optimization with environmental and cost considerations, and scaling up production processes, highlighting the need for more efficient and environmentally friendly modification strategies towards scalable production. This review provides a comprehensive and systematic perspective on strategies for improving the performance of non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) materials, outlines future research directions, and provides a practical guide to promote the effective application of these materials in high-performance fields.
