We introduce strong and electromagnetic interaction selection rules for the two-body decay and production of exotic J(PC) = 0(+-), 1(-+), 2(+-), 3(-+),... hybrid mesons, four-quark states and glueballs. The rules arise from symmetrization in states. Examples include various decays to eta'eta, eta pi, eta'pi and pi(+)pi(0). The symmetrization rules can discriminate between hybrid and four-quark interpretations of a 1(-+) signal. (C) 1997 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
