Synergistic Effects of Neonicotinoids and Piperonyl Butoxide on House Fly (Musca domestica) Populations from Antalya, Türkiye

The house fly, Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae), is an important synanthropic pest and mechanical vector that negatively affects human and animal health. Neonicotinoid and synthetic pyrethroid insecticides are widely used worldwide for adult house fly control; however, numerous studies have documented the development of resistance to these compounds. Synergists such as piperonyl butoxide (PBO) are commonly incorporated into insecticide formulations to enhance efficacy and manage resistance. This study evaluated the toxicity of four neonicotinoids (imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, acetamiprid, and dinotefuran) in combination with PBO against Musca domestica populations from Antalya, T & uuml;rkiye. Adult house flies were collected from multiple districts in Antalya and exposed to different neonicotinoid-PBO ratios under controlled laboratory conditions using the glass jar residue surface method. The results demonstrated that PBO markedly enhanced the toxicity of neonicotinoids, with combinations such as 1 + 0.25 and 1 + 0.5 (neonicotinoid + PBO) achieving high mortality levels, exceeding 80% in most populations. These findings highlight the potential of neonicotinoid-PBO combinations as effective tools for improving control efficacy and mitigating resistance in house fly populations.
