• H2O2-GAC pretreatment effectively mitigated NF270 fouling during nanofiltration of secondary effluent. • Sequential oxidation-adsorption enhanced the removal of organic fouling precursors. • H2O2-GAC pretreatment increased normalized flux and suppressed irreversible fouling. • Membrane surface analyses confirmed reduced deposition of organic foulants on NF270. • XDLVO analysis indicated weakened foulant-membrane adhesion after pretreatment.
