Abstract - The influence of the nonlinearity of the Kerr type on the Talbot effect in binary waveguide arrays (BWAs) is studied for the first time. Our results show that the nonlinear Talbot effect in BWAs can be observed for quite a large range of input intensity if the transverse period of the input signal is N = 1 and 2. In particular, if the input period N = 2, one can observe a very sharp switching for the nonlinear Talbot effect when only waveguides with smaller effective refractive index are excited at the input in the case of self-focusing nonlinearity, or if only waveguides with larger refractive index are excited at the input in the case of self-defocusing nonlinearity. In other cases when the input period N = 3, 4, or 6, the nonlinearity is detrimental to the Talbot effect even if the intensity of the input signals is quite weak.
