Knowledge-based systems (KBS) came into being recently (as compared with Ether software types) and there are not enough guidelines for teaching KBS development. Usually, students are expected to solve real problems without enough practical preparation. Students complete small exercises in the classroom and are then called upon to develop a real project, which is a real problem in their job. A smooth transition from exercises to project development is necessary. This paper discusses a Case Study that serves as a transition between what the students learn in the classroom and the real world problems. We take into account other educational experiences in KBS and a total quality model for expert systems. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
