● Ten double-layer rammed earth models with different RELI morphology were designed. ● Excessively high interface stiffness could severely distort the shear behavior. ● Rammed pits could improve the tensile and shear capacity of rammed earth layers. ● Rammed pit depth had significant effects on both the tensile and shear behavior.
