• First study to test underlying mechanism of recovery high school (RHS) attendance. • RHSs improved substance use disorder statuses, cannabis use, and abstinence. • Recovery-positive peer affiliation mediated some observed beneficial effects of RHSs. • Highlights value of youth-focused recovery supports that can facilitate positive social network change.
