• Energy transition mineral supply chain complexity index is developed to revealing energy transition paradox. • Where strengths in ETM supply chain tier create inertia, it impedes adaptation and exacerbates global energy inequities. • Solutions are proposed to address the gap between resource rich countries and technologically advanced countries.
