Urban sprawl is a form of urban growth that places significant pressure on and leads to the loss of natural areas. Despite the wealth of research on the causes of urban sprawl, studies examining the effect of tourism on it are scarce. This study aims to address this gap. Urban sprawl is caused by various factors, including economic conditions, housing preferences, advancements in transportation, and urban problems previously discussed in the literature. Tourism is an expanding industry that creates spatial requirements for settlements due to the increasing demand for tourism and related investments. Due to the nature of tourism, forests, natural areas, bays, and coasts are under increased pressure. This study aims to suggest the impact of tourism on urban sprawl through a case study. Didim (Türkiye), located on the Aegean Sea coast and where the tourism sector has gained prominence, was selected as the case study. Changes in land use were analyzed using Corine Land Data, updated land use information from the Didim Municipality, and plan schemes. The findings of the study reveal that 72% of the sprawled areas in Didim are due to tourism-related uses. Sustainable tourism planning must ensure that carrying capacity and environmental protection guide the process through a holistic approach and shape planning at all levels.
