• Machiavellianism and psychopathy appeared redundant at the between-person level. • At the within-person level Machiavellianism and psychopathy were distinguishable. • Two factor solution outperformed one factor solution. • Machiavellianism and psychopathy covariance was smaller at the within-person level. • Machiavellianism predicted successive increases of psychopathy, but not vice versa.
