• The reduction chemistry of synthetic [MFe3S4] clusters was systematically studied • Clusters with M = Mo or W bind N2, whereas those with M = V, Cr, or Fe do not • Results support an electronic role for large “heterometals” in binding N2 at Fe • Findings may account for the greater efficiency of the Mo nitrogenase
