• Hyporheic mixing and mixing triggered biogeochemical processes in a laboratory flume were simulated. • The spatial characteristics in mixing zone and nitrogen transformation hotpots were identified. • Nitrification and DNRA occurring in the upstream portions of mixing zone hinder groundwater nitrogen removal.
