Transformer mechanical condition assessment based on vibration signals has garnered significant attention in recent years. In transformer accident analysis, we have found the vibration sideband phenomenon for the first time: symmetrical, low-frequency sideband frequency components appearing near 100 Hz and its multiples. The vibration sideband energy ratio is proposed to characterize the vibration sideband phenomenon quantitatively, and its variation was studied before the sudden increase in acetylene content of transformer oil. Upon disassembly inspection, it was found that electrical discharge had caused mechanical damage to large structural components, such as the pressing plate and blocks. Due to the periodic opening and closing of the damaged parts, their local mechanical parameters undergo low-frequency, periodic variations, thereby causing the vibration sideband phenomenon. Several hours later, after the diffusion of discharge-contaminated insulating oil, a sudden increase in acetylene content could be detected. The vibration sideband energy ratio might serve as one of the diagnostic indicators for assessing the mechanical condition of transformers.
