Claudia Kedar is the author of The International Monetary Fund and Latin America: the Argentine puzzle in context (Philadelphia: Temple University Press, 2013), a book focused on the Bretton Woods financial institution that loomed large in the public record of the troubled economic history of Cold War Latin America. Much less well documented is the role of its twin, the World Bank, in ostensibly promoting the development of the region between 1948 and the end of the Cold War, when it turned its sights on the former Soviet bloc. In her latest book, Kedar postulates ‘the [World Bank] as a proactive and influential player in the Cold War’, in a work that puts ‘the political economy of the Cold War in the region at the center of attention’ (p. 5).
