The advancement of aerospace propulsion demands turbine inlet temperatures exceeding the limits of nickel-based superalloys, which makes Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs) and Environmental Barrier Coatings (EBCs) essential. This review examines current systems, starting with yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and its degradation mechanisms, then evaluates next-generation materials like pyrochlores, rare-earth zirconates, and CMAS-resistant magnetoplumbites. Processing techniques such as EB-PVD, APS, and novel methods like SPS are compared for microstructure control. The critical role of the bond coat/TGO interface in coating lifetime is analyzed, alongside the shift toward SiC/SiC composites and multilayer EBCs for water vapor protection. Advanced characterization and modeling approaches for performance prediction are highlighted. Emerging frontiers include "smart" coatings with embedded sensors, self-healing systems, and ultra-low thermal conductivity designs. This overview provides a concise foundation and future outlook on materials challenges for extreme-environment coatings in next-generation aerospace applications.
