Abstract

• A one-dimensional model is developed to characterize the thermal behavior of a diesel engine coolant preheating system under extremely cold conditions. • The minimum coolant and lubricating oil temperature boundaries required for reliable cold start are determined. • The effects of heat transfer structure on coolant–lubricating oil thermal interaction and preheating performance are clarified. • An optimal temperature combination and corresponding structural parameters are obtained, reducing preheating time by approximately 21%.
