• Thermo-mechanical behavior of energy piles for shallow silos was evaluated. • Effective pile-soil heat exchange radius is 2–3 times the pile diameter. • Higher inlet temperatures and lower flow rates maximize total heat exchange. • Coupled simulations unveil that energy piles ensure safe grain storage temperatures over 1000 h.
