• LiNi0.85-xCo0.15AlxO2 stability was measured by high temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry. • Formation enthalpies from binary oxides become slightly less exothermic as aluminum content increases in the structure. • Formation enthalpies from elements increase linearly with increasing aluminum content in the structure. • Negative mixing enthalpies occur across the entire composition range.
