This paper introduces an image thresholding method using four types of fuzzy thresholding methods taking Gamma membership into account for determining the membership values of the pixels of an image. The effectiveness of this method is illustrated by using a set of images having various types of histograms. A comparative study on images has also been done. The experimental results have demonstrated good performance in unilevel, bilevel and trilevel thresholding. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
