• Designed shear-modulus optimized tubular structure eliminating unstable collapse of thin-walled absorbers. • Reduced peak force by 41% and load fluctuation by 60.04% with retained high SEA. • Verified rigid boundary constraint effectively stabilizes plateau load. • Fabricated graded tubes to realize programmable multi-stage energy absorption.
