Travelers Research Center: A Brief History and Its Contributions to the Emergence of Meteorology and Environmental Research in the Mid-Twentieth Century

Travelers Insurance Company (TIC), located in Hartford, Connecticut, established the Travelers Research Center (TRC) in 1960 to enhance the understanding of meteorology and other environmental factors impacting its business. This article addresses the events leading up to the establishment of TRC and the role it played in the development of meteorology in the mid-twentieth-century United States. During the decade starting in 1955, U.S. atmospheric and environmental sciences received a much-needed financial boost from the federal government and private industry, both motivated by shared concerns and perceived opportunities. These investments in ideas, people, and tools influenced the evolution of atmospheric and related sciences over the next seven decades. A largely forgotten aspect of these efforts was the contribution made by the TIC, which foresaw the value of supporting research and services that indirectly and directly affected its business. Travelers established the Travelers Weather Service (TWS) and the was the Travelers-owned radio station WTIC. The mid-1950s saw the emergence of TV broadcast meteorology, and TWRC applied research to TV and radio broadcast information. Travelers tapped Thomas F. Malone to run both organizations and he was pivotal in their merger to form the TRC in 1960. Malone also played an important role in founding the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), which received its first grant from the National Science Foundation in 1960. The TRC made numerous contributions to applied and basic research meteorology, contributing to the intellectual discourse taking place within the rapidly developing discipline of atmospheric sciences by collaborating with academics and the federal government and influencing the careers of many respected atmospheric scientists.
