• 1G drag force models oversimplify bubble dynamics, limiting physical fidelity. • Two 2G interfacial drag force models were developed for downward flows. • 2G models for relative velocity, shape factor, and drag coefficient were developed. • Downward flows tend to show larger void fraction covariances due to the coring effect. • 2G IDF models achieve good accuracy and enhanced physical fidelity.
