A two-stage transition edge sensor (2stageTES) is a cascaded configuration in which the front-end TES (TES1) is read out by a second-stage TES (TES2). A change in the Joule power in TES1 is associated with a change in the power dissipation in the shunt resistor, R-L,R- 1, used to provide voltage bias to TES1. The change in Joule power in R-L,R- 1 is detected by TES2 that is read out conventionally. The noise and dynamic performance of a 2stageTES is modeled using sensor parameters that are based on ultra-low-noise TES-bolometers under development for the next generation of far-infrared space telescopes. The analysis shows that the front-end-referred noise performance of a 2stageTES is improved compared to the case of a single TES with the same sensor parameters.
