• General and specific formulas were proposed to predict the axial resistance of CFDT stub columns. • Non-uniform confinement was decoupled from dual confinement effects by using circular CFDT columns as reference. • The unified method proved more accurate and consistent than existing profile-specific methods. • The GB 50936-adapted method overestimates axial resistance if inner concrete strength is much higher than sandwiched one.
