• Microplastics found in 89 % of deep-sea invertebrates from 250 to 450 m depth. • Filaments and fragments were the most common microplastic forms detected. • Dominant polymers were polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyethylene terephthalate. • Ecological traits, not taxonomy, drove microplastic accumulation.
