• Ion-exchange-calcination induced transformation to honeycomb-like structure. • BET surface area and pore volume increased sharply after cobalt incorporation. • Co-LSZ/PMS system achieved 74.1% SMX removal under optimized conditions. • High-valent Co(IV) and 1O2 were identified as dominant reactive species.
