• Uranium isotopes were used to trace U fate along redox gradients. • U concentrations decreased systematically along groundwater flow paths. • Isotopic fractionation distinguished adsorption from reductive immobilization. • The contribution of U reduction to attenuation was quantitatively constrained. • Microbially mediated U(VI) reduction was the dominant U attenuation pathway.
