Use of virtual reality for functional improvement of patients with muscular dystrophies: A systematic review

This systematic review aims to examine the use and effectiveness of virtual reality (VR)-based interventions in improving the functional skills of individuals with different types of muscular dystrophies (MD). A comprehensive search of keywords related to VR, MD, and functional skills was conducted across various databases. Screening of titles and abstracts resulted in 35 studies being evaluated through full-text review, with 10 studies ultimately included in the review. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Mixed-Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). The review highlights various VR methods and interventions for assisting patients with different types of MD. While evidence is limited, existing literature suggests that the use of VR in rehabilitation can enhance functional independence, motor skills, and patient motivation. Overall, VR shows promise as a valuable tool for improving recovery in individuals with MD. Further research and development of VR-based interventions tailored to the specific needs of persons affected by MD are warranted to fully harness its benefits in improving functional outcomes for this patient population.
