Abstract
Venus is usually the brightest object in the sky after the sun and moon, but until the space age our knowledge of our “twin planet” was very limited because its surface is hidden by a global cloud layer. Observed by the ancient Babylonians 5,000 years ago, Venus has played an important role in myth, literature, and science throughout recorded history. In 1610, Galileo’s observations of the phases of Venus were important evidence supporting the Copernican theory of the solar system.
