When does management using artificial intelligence lead to unintended consequences? A case study using 'smart' traps

人工智能(AI)的快速进步为管理受关注保护物种提供了新选择,例如通过开发具有选择性捕获特定物种功能的“智能”陷阱。为更深入理解潜在的意外后果,我们提出将基于AI的决策整合到现有的生态动力学模型中。研究表明,基于AI工具的有效性随种群密度变化而变化,可能导致意外后果。我们以新西兰奥特亚罗瓦的害鼠物种——挪威鼠(Rattus rattus)和受保护关注的鸟类物种——韦卡鸟(Gallirallus australis)为例进行说明。已知陷阱会对这两种物种造成伤害;强度足以控制快速增长的鼠群的管理措施可能对非目标物种造成危害。此外,提高陷阱对鼠类的识别能力可能间接且意外地导致韦卡鸟种群数量下降,甚至灭绝。只有当将韦卡鸟误判为鼠类的概率极低时,才能避免韦卡鸟的灭绝。这些结果表明,基于AI的害虫管理可能对非目标物种的种群产生意外后果。
