Abstract

The scientific community is moving toward the scale-up of CO2 electrolyzers. These systems can convert the carbon dioxide released by power plants, steel mills, cement kilns, and other industrial sources back into chemical building blocks using renewable electricity. A major practical hurdle is that these exhaust streams are diluted with N2 and reactive impurities such as O2, NOx, and SOx. Much recent research has therefore aimed to make CO2 electrolyzers tolerant of dirty feeds, with the appealing prospect of installing them directly at the source of emissions, without any gas cleanup. But is this approach as sound as it is appealing?
